Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Saskatoon Branch hosted Ukrainian Cultural Day Camp 2022

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Saskatoon Branch (UCC – SB) hosted a Ukrainian cultural camp for children aged 5-12 in Saskatoon, SK, from July 18 to July 22, 2022.

Ukrainian Cultural Day Camp July 18-22, 2022.

This was the first time since a similar day camp was held in more than 20 years in Saskatoon. Two instructors, Odessa Bahri from Edmonton and Marta Krueger from Saskatoon, led 30 children in activities focused on Ukrainian culture, including dance, crafts, and language. Ms. Bahri is a student at the University of Alberta pursuing a degree in Education, and Ms. Krueger is completing a degree in Business at the University of Saskatchewan. They both have extensive backgrounds and training in various Ukrainian cultural activities.

During the camp, children created posters with Ukrainian symbols and letters, made coloring sheets (e.g., tryzub, sunflowers), rehearsed a play of the Ukrainian folk tale ‘The Mitten,’ learned Ukrainian and English (Ukrainian newcomers) words, played Ukrainian games and learned Ukrainian dance.

For many participants, the camp was their first exposure to Ukrainian culture, whereas others regularly participated in various Ukrainian cultural
activities. The camp was an excellent opportunity for children to meet peers with Ukrainian roots, be immersed in their culture, and, for those escaping the war, feel welcomed in Canada and meet new friends in a friendly environment.

Parents and guardians of the children who participated in the camp enjoyed a concert in Ukrainian and English on the final day that featured all of the activities completed during the camp. We received much positive feedback from the campers and their parents, and many would like to see the center continue in future years. Campers came from Saskatoon, the area, and multiple cities in Ukraine, including 16 displaced children who fled the war.

UCC – SB is proud to provide a positive environment for children in Saskatoon to learn and enjoy Ukrainian culture. We appreciate the support of the Canada Ukraine Foundation, Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble, Vesna Festival, and several individuals who made this camp possible and sponsored kids’ participation.
