Taras Shevchenko was a great Ukrainian poet, artist, and thinker who was born on March 9, 1814, in the village of Moryntsi in central Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. He is considered the founder of modern Ukrainian literature, and his writings formed the foundation for it to the degree that he is also considered the founder of the modern written Ukrainian language. His poetry is national and yet so international and humanistic that it appeals to and speaks for all people. He became the first Ukrainian poet to achieve an international reputation.
Taras Shevchenko’s literary legacy consists of 237 poetic works (ballads, poems, lyrical verses, elegies, satires, and meditations), nine novellas, a journal, an autobiography, and plays. They were composed in different periods of his life and in various geographical locations – Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. Some of his famous works include “Kobzar”, “Haidamaky”, “Haydamaky”, “The Caucasus”, “The Dream”, “The Testament,” and many more.
