On February 24, 2023, the world marked one year of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine; One year of heroic Ukrainian resistance to Russia’s attempt to wipe out the Ukrainian nation; One year of remarkable resilience in the face of genocide, unspeakable crimes, and evil perpetrated against Ukraine.
Canada has strongly supported Ukraine and the Ukrainian people’s right to live free in their own land. Here in Saskatoon and surrounding areas, we have also seen a great deal of support for Ukraine. From displaying flags on houses and businesses, countless fundraisers, and shipping humanitarian aid, Ukrainians need and are grateful for the support. We are grateful to everyone in Canada who continues to Stand with Ukraine.
Since the start of Russia’s unprovoked, all-out assault, Russia has fired almost 5,000 missiles at Ukraine, with 97% of attacks on civilian targets. Russia is committing genocide in Ukraine and is committing crimes on a scale not seen in Europe since WWII. In order to end the genocide being committed against Ukraine, Russia must be defeated. We must ensure that this year’s anniversary – the first of Russia’s full-scale war – is the only anniversary of this war and that in 2023, a new anniversary will arise Ukraine’s Victory Day. This will not come easily, and we must continue supporting Ukraine and its democratic values.
Five million civilians have already been forced to leave Ukraine, and over eight million are internally displaced. Here in Saskatchewan, we have welcomed over 3,500 Ukrainians who have contributed to everyday life here. We thank everyone who has opened their hearts and doors, our city, and the Government of Saskatchewan for supporting these newcomers.
With signing Canadian and Ukrainian anthems, saying prayers, a speech from Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark, words from people who fled the war from Butcha, poems, and more, we marked the anniversary of the full-scaled invasion of Ukraine and once again proclaimed our support for Ukraine and brave Ukrainians.
This past year we have all given thought to the importance of freedom and democratic values due to this senseless war, the importance of human rights, the ability to live a life free from oppression, and the stability of established world order.
We are thankful for the Canadian Government’s support for Ukraine, from humanitarian aid to military supplies. Saskatoon UCC has been shipping medical supplies, and buying support gear and warm clothes for the soldiers. Thank you to everyone who has helped us and other organizations support the newcomers and for the general support of Ukraine!
We are all going to be with Ukraine as long as it takes! Slava Ukraini! Glory to Ukraine!
